Steps to become a CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor to produce Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)

a completed pre-APEL form and your CV.
This should provide assurance that you are competent to be accredited as an energy assessor without having to sit a NVQ at level 3 or 4.
Once we have carried out the initial screening we will contact you to advise what training, if any, you require to fully meet the provisions of the National Occupational Standard.

If you pass the initial screening you will have to complete the following steps to achieve accreditation:
- Complete the full Approval of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) form - you may use the information in your pre-APEL form to complete some sections of the full APEL form. A sponsor will need to sign this form to attest to your experience. This sponsor also needs to see the originals of any supporting certificates (Degree certificates, professional membership certificates etc) and to sign the copies you submiit.
- Provide an examination certificate to demonstrate your competence in the use of your chosen software (recognised training and examinations are available from a variety of software providers for links to their websites click here). This examination will include the submission of one test EPC.
- Provide an examination certificate to demonstrate your understanding of the legislative requirements and of carbon emissions minimisation, this examination is provided by CIBSE Professional Learning, click here to book the training and examination or just the examination if preferred.
- Download and sign the Code of Conduct click here (CCMP006)
- Complete your Continuing Professional Development record by clicking here (you need to provide two years’ worth of CPD records)
- Provide a copy of your company’s Professional Indemnity Insurance.
- Provide two test certificates which will be assessed before you can be accredited. One of these test certificates must be for a new building and the other for an existing building. They should be of a scale suitable for the stream for which you are applying, ie, if you are seeking accreditation as a level 5 assessor, the test certificates should be provided for large complex buildings using your preferred DSM software. If you are applying for level 4 which incorporates level 3, the test certificates should be for level 4 type buildings, not just a small building with frequently occurring characteristics. Your sponsor will need to confirm and sign that these certificates are your own work.

If you are a full member of CIBSE or a similarly ECUK accredited professional body, you will be exempted from completing some aspects of the APEL form.
