Becoming an Air Conditioning Inspector

Air Conditioning Inspectors can provide air conditioning inspection reports for both simple and complex systems.

How to become a CIBSE Air Conditioning Inspector.


Note: CIBSE accredits only air conditioning inspectors capable of working on complex systems, although all those accredited by CIBSE can also inspect simple systems. If you wish to be accredited to work on simple systems only you may wish to contact BESCA who may be able to help you.


Do you have at least two years’ full time experience of designing, installing or maintaining air conditioning systems within the last five years?

Once we have carried out the initial screening we will contact you to advise what training, if any, you require to fully meet the provisions of the National Occupational Standard.

If you pass the initial screening you will have to complete the following steps to achieve accreditation:

  1. Complete the full Approval of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) - you may use the information in your pre-APEL form to complete some sections of the full APEL form. A sponsor will need to sign this form to attest to your experience. This sponsor also needs to see the originals of any supporting certificates (Educational or vocational training certificates, professional membership certificates etc) and to sign the copies you submit.
  2. Provide evidence of any professional memberships you may have.
  3. Download and complete the Code of Conduct here (CCMP006).
  4. Complete your Continuing Professional Development record by clicking here (you need to provide two years’ worth of CPD records).
  5. Provide a copy of your company’s Professional Indemnity Insurance if necessary (Some local authorities are self insured, if this is your situation you need to register the fact on your APEL form).

Training is available from CIBSE Professional Learning on TM44 which provides the methodology for carrying out air conditioning inspections. It also covers the templates upon which air conditioning reports should be based and on the methods of providing copies of reports to your accrediting body.

 

If you are a full member of CIBSE or a similarly accredited professional body, you will be exempted from completing some aspects of the APEL form. Check this table to see if your professional body is recognised.
